I thought maybe to get out of the monotony of the modding development cycle, we ought to talk about other mech games/narratives. Vehicle, military, and other games are welcome for discussion as well. It's not supposed to be a competition flame war, but rather an exploration path for the Dark Horizons: Lore Invasion title.
I once played Future Cop: LAPD, it was quite the handy game. Maybe its appeal didn't last long, but I can recall certain elements of the game. Maybe, there are some units worthy for Lore? There are other mech games, especially on the DOS platform. I haven't gotten there just yet.

Oh, I just wanted to say something. I already played Future Cop, but you really need to manage the supply on the highest pedigree of difficulty. The story and theme of each mission outlines the design of gameplay. For instance, a jail break by dropship requires excellent aerial projectiles to prevent prisoner escape. I was running low on the right ammo when I reached the map boss(es). I did not consider about throwing shots at really really tough turrets to be a waste. Upon fighting dropships, I tried to time my grenades, only for one to backfire on me. I also got hurt in traps. It pays to be careful, that is the lesson here. I should have been careful on surveying and observing obstacles. The story of the mission is a obvious hint.
I'm just trying to say that even though I find this game fun (enough), the frustration of some puzzles/levels can keep you up trying to reach the finish line. On gear, I understand the upgrade design of supposed new weapons. You're better off with this gun than that. What I don't get, is that the older weapons loses out their appeal in all fields. Sure, I could just cheat and be on my merry way. When the game is just that difficult, cheating might be the way to play it. Even then, you are stuck with a certain way to play the game. So many options in the pay load, yet it is as good as skill? On skill, oh yeah. Depending on your skill level, certain gear will suffice. Even with good gear, it is not much of a boon, considering that platforming does exists, and that with limited supplies. Talk about a cliffhanger, talk about a tightrope walker, you know what I mean? Platforming, especially necessary platforming, is not a puzzle. Sure, I could handle some jumps here and there, but not to the extent where I am thinning down the lines. And with all kinds of things hailing at you with a few supplies scattered about the map.

Going down to (the bottom of) it, I was expecting to play as a mech. My expectations were these giant clunky metal machines, toting arsenals of something. If it hovers, it is not some fast thing. But to play as a mech that could platform? Plus it must have such grace to waltz through to the next supplies? It's not what a mech is as a standard. As fun it is as a game, it doesn't have that expected mech narrative in mind. I wouldn't call this a true mech game (essence of mech battles). Still, I do like some of the mech elements it retains. Some of the weapons are interesting. Even the precinct assault mode is amusing. I especially like how the Sky Captain vocals gibbers on. It's pretty funny. I'm sure there are other vocals of some merit too.

There's other games like Future Cop: LAPD.
While tank games are not exactly mechs, they do function in similar attributes.
One of the oldest or known tank games, the Spectre series. Inspired by Battlezone and Tank, this game took on a 3D perspective with vector graphics. Maybe there's a chance with eye strains and headaches, but hey, that's vector, not models blurring up the screen. For Spectre VR, the fuzz is the start of a visual mess.
The first game is pretty alright, while I can't say that the obstacles and flat terrain does any justice, it's a cyberspace environment so I guess I shouldn't complain. Okay, maybe I should complain. It's cyber so I wouldn't mind environmental factors and etc. I really like the first-person, behind-tank, and birds-eye view. All three views can be used within your control. I also like the class selection/customization. Too bad about custom decals.
The second game, Spectre VR and/or Spectre Supreme, is the update on the original title. There are definitely more weapons (but I personally think some of them would be either subpar or overkill [at me]), translocation objects/sectors, and different enemies.
I admit that I didn't get to play the subsequent titles much. However, Spectre Web alpha (yes, alpha, feedback would help development) is freely available and I think this title encompasses most features of the previous titles. I like the fact that I could jump, but it feels less tanky despite the Spectre series being a cyberspace theme. I do like the seeker missile and pulse burst (which is both ground-to-ground and air-to-ground round, I cannot say for any other features expect for its lack against airborne targets). The enemies and hazards are very interesting! I saw sentient walls, shotgun circles, gray turrets, yellow planes, red lava, and orange crashers. I wanted to make sprites sets from all the actor objects!
Still, this simple game is still simple. One can surpass the levels with a bit of maneuvering ingenuity. It's not too hard to beat the game. Regardless, Spectre still stands out as an inspiration for similar games.

There's also Sunday Panzers, which seems to be an updated tank game. Its main theme is team death match, with probably other team-based type gaming sessions. Sadly, it does not run on the Wine compiler. It is quite fun despite the lack of a turnable turret (just like Spectre!). At least the terrain is in x, y, and z graphic coordinates. Game becomes very difficult nearing the end. Nice music though.
There's also Stellar 7. I once read about it in a book. I can't say if the remake made it look better due to it being a vector redesign of tanks and objects.

I heard that the first Ground Control title is pretty good for a sci-fi strategy game. Asides from the lack of selection of screen resolution choices and broken mods, it looks like a pretty good hybrid combination between Star Craft and Spring RTS (includes fire, movement, and formation modes). Are there mechs? Well, I guess hover bikes/tanks count. Plus APC. Maybe, those games (Spring RTS [and maybe Ground Control]) can be used as free resources. That way, nobody has to stress the media stuff much. I'm just putting out ideas. At least it's a start.
Oh, I almost forgot about Battlezone 98 Redux. It's a re-release of Battlezone (1998), the hover tank action-strategy fps/tps game on space. Kind of like DH:Lore. I think that its fictional Cold War story is like DH:Lore, but it was situated on the moon/space and with less mechs (and Command & Conquer too, but again, it was situated on the resources [not time travel {such elements would made Command & Conquer's story a bit out of place}], on the moon/space and with less mechs). Gameplay works well enough for the year 1998. At least Battlezone (1998) would been DH:Lore's precursor, given their similarities and date of publication. | There's also Battlezone (1980)! That's the first variant of the Battlezone series.
EDIT (May 22, 2023); Yeah, these games are horrible in the extent of arcade mission design. Of course, being singleplayer mode, one would expect quite the challenge. These drop-off insertion missions do have an appeal as stress gaming. I however, don't want to run and fetch like a errand boy, especially under dire circumstances. I personally prefer a lax go on games. DH: Lore is the perfect build of optionally casual to expert gaming.
So while I do appreciate the unique design of Ground Control's squad interaction and Battlezone 1998's semi-strategy in fps, the (real-time action) challenges to stress test the capabilities might become too overwhelming for varied adaptability. We're talking about being swamped and what you can do as a tweak, matters little in such situations.

Alright, so enough of the strategy games. The theme is about robots. It's just like old board or war games tend to include robots.
Moving onward, I found three mech games that may fit the bill of DH:Lore.
Archimedean Dynasty and the AquaNox series. Submarine game. You can shop for stuff between missions.
Shattered Steel. Definitely a mech game, with dropships from space and etc.
Amok. Aqua mech/sub game.

I should go over detail, but for sure, these games should qualify as mech games.

I don't know about you, but the Tribes FPS series has been going on in some form. I don't say that it's exactly MAVs/mechs, but for sure, it's like Battlezone 98 Redux, only that it's much easier to work with considering a lack of (difficult) SP missions. It's like Unreal Tournament 2004, which contains a few maps with vehicles, no mechs though. At the very least, its story is related to the MetalTech series. I think that Tribes is like Dark Horizons: Lore Invasion in many ways. Too bad there's too much titles popping out like crazy. That's plenty of maintenance given the free downloads. I can't believe that it has faded amidst the spawling modern-like FPS titles. I guess its a bit too sci-fi? Still, it's free nowadays.
Okay, take your pick. I'm sure there's more out there. I wanted a discussion about this series. I wanted a Linux supported title, plus a clean virustotal.com scan check. I can't say the latest title is Linux friendly given its Steam repository's OS rule. Yes, I think these games require an online account for multiplayer mode.
I won't display links given the fact that malware is still present in the earlier titles.

Lore uses the same game engine as tribes Ribby. As a matter of fact, One of our most prestigious Skunk modders, Ishbuu, used tribes maps during testing. I really miss that hard to get along with fellow sometimes.

It's kind of ironic that Tribes got claimed malware while Lore usually have metric tactics. I already emailed one webmaster about the possibility. Tribes is said to be a good FPS (jetpacks, vehicles, and more), yet it isn't popular despite free downloads. Although I admit that the default weapon looks kind of funky. A change of default equipment may help. Maybe those Tribes developers can work with the skunkworks mod.
