I decided to kick off the live beat with some map discussions. I mean, it exists, so yeah! Okay, let us go.
One of my favorite maps, would be the 'Devils Crossing' Team DeathMatch Game Map. It is a cold and dreadful blue. Obviously, you know its going to be a blue town, a industrial patch in the middle of rural nowhere blue town. I recall the stacks of ruined apartments, just standing there, crumbling, until the end of its days. Their slow writhing agonizing deaths, seems to last for an eternity, to be etched forever in memory. I ask myself, is this death? Is there truly an end? While all may pass, some things don't fade away, to stand the test of time, as testament.
Seriously, the buildings are visual depictions of the war that rages on. It took away what was past. They are the final symbols of civility to endure the pillaging and razing of the battle. It's quite the theme. I like to hide behind, even jump on top, the buildings. I especially like to snipe down like sentry. Lobbing mines work out too, but it's not accurate. Still, the opposing team can get me too. I like that.
I don't mind the other areas, it works out for me. It's too bad that as a Federated States unit, I didn't get to see much action on the industrial side. Maybe it's designed that way. Maybe its a message about industrialism, and how it eats away at humanity, hence the ruined apartments. I think I am overthinking things. It's quite the coincidence though.

Very philosophical observations on Devil's Crossing. I didn't put any deep thinking into that mission. I just wanted it to be a decent fighting map. Glad to hear you like it and it sets a mood for you though.

Ironically, the apartments could be a sign of urbanization because of industrial development. Eventually, it would been like people stuffed into poor housing complexes like prisoners. Things are going bad, really bad, as freedoms are being restricted. Reference could be from the movie, Richard Fleischer's "Soylent Green" or the novel Harry Harrison's "Make Room! Make Room!".

Best map is definitely Rogue River. My map evaluations are more technical lol. Been over a lot of my preferences with Sling. Get into combat quickly, no places to get stuck, some open areas and some areas with cover, minimize imbalanced positions, and it's good for me. On the secondary side I do enjoy good aesthetics (for example, the desert box canyon arena map checks the above boxes but is a bit basic) and the thematic part of it - trying to capture an oil refinery or port, something important to the war effort, etc. (disclosure - I made the Rogue River map with some help from Sling )

Rogue River assault map is spacious, but you do have to watch your distance. Confederation has more cover, even though the buildings are spaced out, but that's like TDM Devils Crossing. Buildings are big. Devils Crossing have cramped up buildings like a ghetto, or a mountain pass. Does make for interesting close quarter combat. Still, you're not going to expect battlefields to take place in urban settings all the time. The bridge is above shallow water, where the shore is accessible to make an amphibious assault. In Devils Crossing, the bridge is above a canyon and the drop is quite steep of a moat. Plus, there's the bridge guard towers to watch out for. Quite the bottlenecking.
I'll say that Rogue River is definitely a more uplifting atmosphere. Its highlight is the space (sniper's treat) and the crossable trenches. Devils Crossing is basically a graveyard, the supply depot next to a abandoned town may suggest economic slump either ways. Why, there's even a sunken ship! It's practically a ghost town!
Congratulations on your map achievement. It is truly a modding/mapping wonder. I tried mapping, but not good fps mapping. I guess I will create its own discussion topic in order to avoid confusion. The two maps are quite similar in certain ways. I'm pretty there are behind the scenes moments too.
